About

SpaceCodeCinema.com is a technology study blog by Victor O. Alvarez. It discusses Computer Science and Computer Culture. It also includes original fiction by Victor.

This blog is written as a personal Digital Garden, where I collect useful information that helps me solve problems while I work. Most post will evolve as time goes on.

Who is Victor O. Alvarez?

Victor is a Software Developer interested in Unix-like Systems and Dev-ops. He also writes fiction and creates art in his spare time.

What tools does Victor use and recommend?

I like Unix-like systems, but I recommend others to focus on the tools they have. If you have Windows, learn to work with Windows or if you start with a MacBook, learn macOS. You can try Open Source and Linux in many ways within both Windows and Mac.

I also recommend you focus on learning command line tools rather than focusing on a Linux or Unix-like desktop. I do enjoy working with a Linux Desktop, but it is more productive to work with what you have and move on later to what you like the most.

Advice on Information Technology

  • Consistency is key to success, and sometimes we must fail to learn.

  • What you read, write and practice is more important than information you collect.

  • Learn to ask smart questions.

  • Try to solve your own problem and then ask smart questions to your peers.

  • If your device doesn't help you program, do try to find a way to learn and practice. In my case, I used an SDF.org shell-account through SSH when I was unable to install Linux on my machine. I learned VIM and basic shell-scripting. Later on, I acquired a better laptop, which allowed me to run Virtual Machines and learn even more with the skills I had. Today, I would recommend at least a Bluetooth keyboard to use with apps that help you learn programming on a tablet or phone. I also would recommend old Windows 10 laptops that can still browse the web with Chrome or Firefox.
