I like Unix-like systems, but I recommend others to focus on the tools they do have. If you have Windows, learn to work with Windows or if you start with a Mac, learn macOS. You can try Open Source and Linux in many different ways within both Windows and Mac. I also recommend you focus on learning command line tools rather than focusing on a Linux or Unix-like desktop. I do enjoy working with a Linux Desktop, but it is more productive to work with what you have and move on later to what you like the most.
